Areas of interest * Kap Mounda This is the southernmost point of the island and the long sandy beach which radiates from Mounda make it popular with tourists. Its botanical interest lies in the dunes to the south east and the cliff tops that overlook them. Due to grazing and tourist trampling, the dunes are significantly degraded but nonetheless support small numbers of orchids, some of which are relative rarities. The cliff-top scrub and meadows are rather more productive but similarly suffer from tourist development and subsistence farming. Despite these problems, the area is well worth exploration and it's still possible to find some rewarding orchid rich sites. The tracks in the area are typically Greek and caution is advised in poor weather conditions. Ophrys mammosa, Ophrys stavri, Ophrys reinholdii, Ophrys mavrochila, Ophrys helenae, Ophrys villosa, Ophrys cornutula, Ophrys penelopeae, Anacamptis fragrans, Serapias parviflora. * Sami This small town and port is situated on the east side of the island and much of the surrounding garrigue holds orchids. Of particular note are the verges along the road heading north east out of the town towards Kap Dichalio. The area is however subject to heavy grazing so orchid numbers can vary. To the north west of Sami, the west side verges of the road that skirts the Gulf of Sami between Karavomilo and Agia Evfimia can also be productive. Ophrys cephalonica, Ophrys grammica, Ophrys leucadica, Ophrys mesaratica, Ophrys perpusilla, Ophrys sicula, Orchis quadripunctata, Anacamptis papilionacea ssp aegea. + Poros This is another small town and port situated in the southern foothills of Mount Atros. Poros is an area of hillside slopes and garrigue rich in orchids and which can be accessed by numerous agricultural tracks that lead from the main road to Sami between Ag Nikolaos and Dzanata. The variety of orchids to be found here is amongst the richest on the island and the only area where Orchis anthropophora can be seen. Ophrys attica, Ophrys bombiflora, Ophrys cephalonica, Ophrys gottfriediana, Ophrys hellenica, Ophrys spruneri, Ophrys stavri, Ophrys ulyssea, Ophrys mesaratica, Himantoglossum robertianum, Orchis italica, Orchis anthropophora, Anacamptis laxiflora, Serapias bergonii. *Komitata This is a village situated on the eastern flanks of the Kalon Mountains, directly opposite and with wonderful views of the adjacent island of Ithaka. Roadside verges and uncultivated areas of land in a wide radius around the village can produce good numbers of orchids, including some of the islands rarities. Ophrys gottfriediana, Ophrys mavromata, Ophrys cephaloniensis, Ophrys luecadica, Ophrys cornutula, Ophrys reinholdii, Orchis italica, Ophrys ulyssea, Ophrys reinhardiorum, Orchis quadripunctata. *Gero Gombos Lighthouse This noted landmark stands on the cliffs above the Ionian Sea, surrounded on all other sides by a very large area of coastal garrigue that produces good numbers of orchids. The plants can however be localised and with such a large area to cover the visitor must be prepared for some leg-work. The road verges along the last half kilometer to the beach at Paralia Lagkadakia is a good place to start. This area is a stronghold for the rare Serapias Ionica which can sometimes be found in large numbers here. Ophrys leochroma, Ophrys bombyliflora, Ophrys penelopeae, Ophrys sicula, Ophrys hellenica, Ophrys perpusilla, Ophrys leucadica, Ophrys ulyssea, Anacamptis fragrans, Anaamptis papilionacea subsp. aegaea, Serapias ionica, Serapias lingua, Neotinea lactea. *Kaminarata This is a small town in the western hills of the Paliki Peninsula and which is the local centre for a largely agricultural community. Due west of the town is a large area of garrigue and sparse woodland which slopes gently down to the coastal cliffs approximately 600 meters away. Although grazed it is rich in orchids and is another good location in which to find Serapias ionica. Ophrys cephalonica, Ophrys bombyliflora, Ophrys cornutula, Ophrys sicula, Ophrys hellenica, Ophrys perpusilla, Ophrys leucadica, Ophrys ulyssea, Ophrys mesaratica, Ophrys gottfriediana, Ophrys attica, Anacamptis fragrans, Anaamptis papilionacea subsp. aegaea, Serapias ionica, Serapias lingua, Orchis italica. | ||
