Areas of interest

* Corfu Town

It is most unusual to be recommending a location of botanical interest that lies in the centre of large towns but in this particular case one of the most productive and reliable of orchid sites on the island is to be found in Corfu Town. Some 200 metres south of the main bus station in Theotoki Square and adjacent to the prison can be found an oasis of tranquility and open woodland that is the British Cemetery. The curator and his small staff take great pride in maintaining the grounds in a way that is compatible with both a reverence for its deceased inhabitants and also the prosperity of its botanical ones. The site boasts a species list that is almost certainly larger than any other equivalent area on the island. Ophrys romolini, Ophrys attica, Ophrys helenae, Ophrys cornutula, Ophrys reinholdii, Ophrys mammosa, Anacamptis albanica, Anacamptis collina, Dactylorhiza romana, Neotinea lactea, Neotinea ustulata, Neotinea tridentata, Orchis simia, Serapias cordigera,

* Pantokrator

At 914 metres this is Corfu's largest mountain, being situated in the far north corner of the island. From the village of Perama a road winds up the mountain to a point within sight of the summit. Orchids can be found plentifully at many sites along the road. Himantoglossum caprinum, Ophrys leucadica, Ophrys reinholdii, Ophrys argolica, Ophrys melena, Orchis quadripunctata, Orchis pauciflora.

* Strinilas

This is a village set in the western foothills of Pantokrator and surrounded by hilly scrub and fields that teem with both orchids and many other flower species.
Ophrys leochroma, Ophrys reinholdii, Ophrys herae, Orchis quadripunctata, Orchis italica, Anacamptis collina.

* Ayii Deka

To the south of Corfu town is a small mountain to the west of the village that bears the same name. A path leads from the village up the slopes to a ruined monastery and orchids are plentiful along the track sides and in the surrounding country.
Himantoglossum caprinum, Ophrys leucadica, Ophrys reinholdii, Ophrys argolica, Ophrys melena, Orchis quadripunctata, Orchis pauciflora.

* Antionioti Lagoon

This is a large saltwater lake located at the northernmost tip of the island. The areas of scrub and light woodland to north and south of the lake are prime orchid territory, particularly Serapias species. Anacamptis papilionacea ssp aegea, Anacamptis laxiflora, Neotinea lactea, Ophrys attica, Ophrys ferrum-equinum, Ophrys cornutula, Serapias cordigera, Serapias ionica.
